Mallard Maintenance Release Note #2 - Real Weather Pilot
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In order to keep Real Weather Pilot current, we have complied with a request
from the FAA to stop sending "N" numbers when calling DUATS. They recommended
that we send the user's name or anything without numbers 1-9 in it. Since
there are now many programs being written to access DUATS and many of them
send "none" or "unknown" to the DUATS buffer (which is perfectly alright),
we decided to send randomized characters (all letters A-Z). The FAA software
can easily eliminate these as invalid aircraft numbers so it no longer
causes them concern. Any word such as "none" can easily fill up the DUATS
AC number buffer so selecting any permanent string of characters will cause
DUATS to hang on a "aircraft number buffer full - select another number"
prompt. Hence, randomizing.
Thanks
~~~~~~
Our FAA and DTC contacts were very helpful and insisted that they encourage
general public use of the facilities. Between us, we had a solution in less
than 5 minutes that satisfies all of our needs. This kind of cooperation is
tantamount to building a "super highway."
This is likely to be the last hiccup for RWP connecting with DUATS. We want
to thank our patient users, the FAA and Data Transformation for their helpful
participation.
